Battle for Wesnoth: Free Mac Roll Playing Game

Today's Daily Dose is an open source roll playing game called Battle for Wesnoth. This game is a turn-based RPG akin to many other popular action-based RPGs like Warcraft. As an open source project, the game has been developed for multiple platforms including Mac OS X, Windoze, and Linux. Fortunately, the game has advanced multi-player options, including network play, so all of these platform choices mean you can play against any of your friends, regardless of what platform they have. Read on for a look under the hood at Battle for Wesnoth.

The Battle for Wesnoth download is about 70 Megabytes in size and includes both the game and a map editing program.

The game comes with a handy tutorial mode that will show you everything you need to know about controlling players and game play.

A number of campaigns are built-in to the game so you can choose an adventure of your liking. In addtion, game preferences are pretty deep so the experience can be customized.

As mentioned, there is significant multi-player support in this game, and that includes playing over th net, including the use of gameservers. The multiplayer functions of the game allow you to host your own server, or to join the public server. When we logged on to the public server, there were several active games happening online that users could join.

All in all, Battle for Wesnoth appears to be a very mature, sophisticated, and easy to play RPG. If you've never tried an RPG before, this is a great chance to get your hands dirty for FREE! There are clearly a large number of existing users out there, so if you're looking to play against others or get your friends involved, that should be easy enough.
