Remember Government’s $35 Tablet? Launches This June [Will Cost Rs. 2,200/]

Remember the $35 tablet from Indian government? The project has gone through its own yo-yo cycle with government canceling the tender and delaying the project by more than 6 months.

The good news is that there is a light at the end of this tunnel and early this month, government announced that 10,000 (Sakshat) tablet will be delivered to IIT-Rajasthan in late June and over the next four months 90,000 more would be made available at a price of Rs 2,200/device.

Government will subsidize the cost by 50%, so a student would have to pay only Rs. 1,100/ for the device (though it’s hard to believe that the actual cost price of device is only Rs. 2,200/).

Like we said earlier, we are ‘cautiously optimistic’ about the device and we certainly hope that this project lives up to its expectation.

If executed well, this can drastically change the way education is imparted and importantly, open up plethora of possibilities for startups/technology companies to build products around the education ecosystem.

DealFace – Mouthshut too joins the deal wagon, launches a deal site

Yet another deal site.

After startups are done creating this “big deal” category (and we pat their back for this), biggies have woken up and are now launching their deal site (Rediff launched Rediff DealHoJaaye, Times Internet launched TimesDeals). dealface

Mouthshut too has joined the bandwagon with the launch of Dealface (good take on ‘mouth’ shut). The site works like any other deal site (currently available only in Mumbai) – i.e. you can buy the deal from the site, will receive the coupon (via email/SMS).

From what I know, most of the deal sites are crumbling and lately, the rush is to get more deals to the site, without completing the entire sales process (we have received quite a few emails from angry users about retailers rejecting the deal coupons, calling it invalid/not as per T&C (“sorry, we forgot to mention that deals were available only during weekdays, not weekends”).

Do we have more deal sites than unique deals offered? What’s your take?

Don’t you think that there is a need for vertical deal sites/niche/more focused?

[Thanks Dhruv for the tip.]
